You Walked the Dog… So Why Are They STILL Doing Zoomies?
Let’s Talk About What “Enough Exercise” Actually Looks Like
You did your part.
You grabbed the leash. You went on the walk. You let them sniff that one bush for an unnecessarily long amount of time. You even took the long way home. You finally walk through the door thinking, Okay, that should do it. And then it happens.
Zoomies.
Across the living room. Around the couch. Possibly over something they absolutely know they're not supposed to jump over.
And now your dog is standing there staring at you like: “That was a great warm-up. What are we doing next?”
If this sounds suspiciously familiar, welcome. You probably have an active dog. And while daily walks are incredibly valuable, sometimes a walk just…isn't enough.
First Things First: Your Dog Isn't Your Neighbor's Dog
You've probably heard some version of:
“I only walk my dog for 30 minutes and he's perfectly fine!”
Great for him.
Meanwhile, yours just completed a neighborhood walk and appears prepared to compete in a canine triathlon.
Dogs are individuals. Breed, age, temperament, health, conditioning and plain old personality can all influence how much activity a dog enjoys and needs. A leisurely stroll may be plenty for one dog. For another?
That's the appetizer. This can be especially noticeable with high-energy, working and sporting dogs. Some of these pups seem to wake up every morning with a fully charged battery…and apparently no power-saving mode.
So instead of asking, “How much exercise should a dog get?” we like a slightly different question:
“Is what we're doing working for my dog?”
That's a much more useful place to start.
“Okay, But How Do I Know If My Dog Needs More?”
Sometimes the clues aren't exactly subtle.
Your walk ends. Their workout apparently does not.
You come home expecting a tired dog. Instead, they grab a toy. Then another toy. Then stare at you. Then bring you the first toy again because apparently you didn't understand the assignment. Some dogs simply enjoy more physical activity than a typical neighborhood walk provides.
The leash has magical powers.
You can whisper “walk” from three rooms away and suddenly hear paws scrambling across the floor. You touch the leash?
Instant athlete.
If your dog seems permanently ready for the next adventure, you may simply have a naturally active pup on your hands.
(Congratulations. Your personal trainer has four legs.)
Your schedule and your dog's schedule are having creative differences.
Your calendar says:
Work.
Kids.
Appointments.
Dinner.
Laundry.
Errands.
Your dog's calendar says:
RUN.
Unfortunately, your dog did not consult you before creating their schedule. We love our dogs, but real life still exists. There are going to be days when a long exercise session just isn't happening. And that's exactly why having additional exercise options can be helpful.
And then there's Alabama weather…
You know the drill. Beautiful morning. Approximately seven minutes later?
Surface of the sun.
Then humidity. Then rain. Then somehow all three.
There are days when an outdoor adventure sounds wonderful and other days when you step outside and immediately reconsider every decision that led you there.
Having another way to provide structured activity can be especially useful when Mother Nature decides she has other plans.
Enter: The Slat Mill
This is usually where we get the look.
“Wait…you put dogs on a treadmill?” Well…sort of.
But there's an important difference.
Our slat mill is NOT motorized.
There's no motor underneath deciding how fast your dog needs to move.
Your dog powers the mill.
If the dog moves, the mill moves.
That means a dog can walk, trot or run as appropriate for their individual session.
And no, we're not standing there trying to turn your family pet into Usain Bolt.
That's not the goal.
So What Is the Goal?
Movement. Structure. An additional outlet for active dogs.
At PacePup Runners, we're not interested in seeing how fast we can make a dog run or pushing every dog through the exact same workout.
Because—say it with us— Every. Dog. Is. Different.
One dog might hop on and think:
“THIS IS THE GREATEST INVENTION OF ALL TIME.”
Another might need some time to figure things out. Some may naturally want to run. Others may prefer a comfortable trot. that's why sessions are supervised and approached with the individual dog in mind. Your dog doesn't have to keep up with another dog. They just need to be themselves.
And No, We're Not Trying to Replace Your Walks
This part is important.
Your dog's walk isn't just exercise.
It's also:
“Who peed here?”
“Wait. Someone ELSE peed here.”
“Is that a squirrel?”
“I must investigate this leaf immediately.”
Walking gives dogs opportunities to sniff, explore and experience their environment. Training, play, mental enrichment, rest and time with their people matter too. PacePup isn't here to replace those things. Think of us as another tool in your dog-parent toolbox.
Because sometimes you need a screwdriver. Sometimes you need a hammer. And sometimes you need somewhere for your Rotty to put all that Rotty. 😂
“But I Feel Bad When I Can't Exercise My Dog Enough.”
We hear you. Life gets busy.
The goal isn't to make dog owners feel guilty because they couldn't squeeze a two-hour adventure into a random Tuesday. Quite the opposite.
Part of creating PacePup Runners LLC was recognizing that there are owners who genuinely want to keep their dogs active but could use another option. Maybe you work long hours. Maybe the weather is terrible. Maybe you've got kids running in seventeen different directions.Maybe you simply have a dog whose energy level could power a small Alabama town.
That's where we come in.
